"I've watched The Home Edit and desperately need similar help in my home, but I've got no idea where to start."
We now hear this from new clients all the time, and believe me, we love The Home Edit too! For those who have yet to tune in, The Home Edit is a home makeover show on Netflix that's a bit Marie Kondo, a bit Instagram, and a bit Queer Eye. We love Clea and Joanna's energy and evident warmth towards their clients, and, like us, they clearly love what they do! Their genuine pleasure at achieving their client's decluttering and organisation goals are fun to see. The show is often very true to life - sometimes the storage boxes they bring with them don't fit, you see them arranging items one way, then changing their minds and trying all over again.
We love how realistic they are about people's lives, and they don't advocate impossible to live with minimalism on people whose lives make that an unattainable goal. They encourage everyone to find organisational systems that work for them and leave the guilt of owning things behind. Take a look at their website for ideas and inspiration - https://www.thehomeedit.com/
The show and books have introduced us to two new terms: "Editing" and "Backstock". We rather like the idea of "editing" our belongings - it sounds so much more positive than "getting rid of" - "Backstock" is a term for additional supplies bought for when the current items run out. This is fine in moderation, but in our experience, homes in the UK don't usually have enough storage space for crates of spare shampoo, tins of beans etc. If lockdown has taught us anything, most items we need are available all the time, and we don't need to stock up as if we're preparing for the end of the world.
Have a look at the UK Facebook group (The Home Edit-UK-Netflix Series). Members of the group share photos of their current projects, asking for and receiving advice and encouragement. They share before and after photos and ideas for storage products. The Home Edit have their rage of storage items found here but members often suggest more affordable alternatives.
Are we like The Home Edit? Yes, we have boundless enthusiasm and energy, nothing phases us, and we are totally hands-on - if you haven't watched the show, we heartily recommend it! Then get started on whichever organising project you need to tackle in your own home. Don't forget, even just organising a small desk area, a single kitchen cupboard, or a shelf in your wardrobe will give you a real boost.
